Cat Power Sings Dylan: The 1966 Royal Albert Hall Concert
Description
In November of last year, Cat Power took to the stage of London’s Royal Albert Hall to re-enact Bob Dylan’s legendary “Royal Albert Hall” concert, during which the artist famously "went electric", playing the second half of the show with an electric guitar. This exasperated many folk purists, one of whom even shouted "Judas!" at the time.
Dylan's performance—which actually took place at the Manchester Free Trade Hall—was the subject of a bootleg film mistakenly titled “The Royal Albert Hall Concert,” which quickly achieved cult status.
Cat Power’s 2022 interpretation of that legendary night, nearly 60 years later, is both faithful and personal, as all her covers are. The audience was able to rediscover the spirit of the original performance—including a "Judas" shouted from the crowd—through Chan's unique voice, which found new ways to dance above Dylan's meter and verses.
