Interconnectedness

Description

Carmen Souza was born in Lisbon in 1981 to a Christian family of Cape Verdeans. From an early age, the long absence of her father due to his work at sea made her feel the sentiment of "Sodade," a mix of melancholy and hope. She grew up in a bilingual home speaking Creole and Portuguese, always surrounded by Cape Verdean culture. In 2003, she met Theo Pas'cal, her producer, mentor, and one of the best bassists in Portugal. He introduced her to jazz and other contemporary sounds that strongly influenced her musical development. Since then, they have co-composed all her albums and defend them together on stage. After the passing of the most famous Cape Verdean, Cesaria Évora, Carmen Souza was designated, within the new generation, as the one responsible for extending the musical success of the archipelago. She has become a true figurehead of world music and one of the most sought-after jazz singers in Europe. Her style is as unique as it is convincing, and her Cape Verdean roots are as evident as her desire to create a new language under the label "World Jazz." Interconnectedness is the name of Carmen Souza's 10th album; it speaks of how all of humanity is connected. "This music is the result of what has happened in the world over the past 2 years and what has happened to me over the last 4 years. The experience of loss has changed my perspective on life and, consequently, has changed my music." "As composers and artists, Theo and I have undergone significant questioning, and the degree of experimentation in the production has increased. The desire to play our music in front of an audience has made us remember the many performances around the world and has brought a sense of joy to the album." Interconnectedness was recorded and produced by Carmen Souza and Theo Pascal between Lisbon and London. The album includes 7 new songs and 3 very personal versions of classic songs: My Baby Just Cares For Me, Sous Le Ciel de Paris, and Pata Pata. "As with every album we have made over the years, the music always evolves into other perspectives and meanings as it is performed on the many stages of the world, so I look forward to seeing what this music has in store and accompanying its evolution."
