For this new Glossa recording, made from last year's performances at the Opera Barga Festival in Tuscany, Carlo Ipata conducts his own orchestra, AuserMusici. The score used for this dramma in musica is the one from Reggio Emilia from 1719, updated by Gasparini to match the exceptional talent of the baroque stars Francesco Borosini, Antonio Bernacchi, Marianna Bulgarelli, and Faustina Bordoni. In this disc, their counterparts who rise to the challenge brilliantly are Leonardo De Lisi (Bajazet), Filippo Mineccia (Tamerlano), Giuseppina Bridelli (Asteria), and Ewa Gubanska (Irene). We should also mention the small role given to Raffaele Pe, star of the recently released disc The Medici Castrato by Glossa. Like many other composers active at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, Gasparini was overshadowed by the spectacular talent of Vivaldi or Porpora (and by the influence of Farinelli and Carestini), and obviously by Handel, whose score for Tamerlano (the earlier version of Gasparini's Il Bajazet was titled Tamerlano) reflects a very attentive reading of Gasparini's operas.
