Vittoria Raffaela Aleotti (c.1575-c.1646) was one of the first female composers and one of the leading musical figures of the 16th century, also known for her talents as a harpsichordist, organist, and conductor. She grew up at the musically influential Este court in Ferrara and entered the convent of San Vito at the age of 14, where she continued her musical education. Later, she became the director of the San Vito convent near her hometown of Ferrara and composed into old age, admired among others by Duke Alfonso d'Este, Pope Clement VIII, and Archduchess Margaret of Austria. Her madrigals, the first of which she wrote at the age of 16, are considered a well-hidden musical gem. With their polyphonic refinement and emotional depth, they testify to her innovative compositional style.The new album by the vocal ensemble Cantus Thuringia, with harpsichordist Bernhard Klapprott, brings Aleotti's exquisite madrigals to life. This recording not only highlights the artist's remarkable talent but also her significant contribution to Renaissance music. The album allows for a rediscovery of Aleotti's work, offering a fresh and vibrant interpretation that captures the essence of her musical genius.
