Originally from Texas, he gained recognition as an actor—X-Men: First Class, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and most recently, winner of the Best Actor Award at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival for Nitram—but music is perhaps his first love, and his greatest source of comfort. A chance encounter with the renowned Jim Jarmusch brought him into the orbit of the Sacred Bones label, which released Caleb's debut album, The Mother Stone, in 2020. Psychedelic without being retro, this indulgent free-wheeling journey was critically acclaimed but hid a secret—he had already completed another album. While filming the dystopian movie Finch alongside Tom Hanks, Caleb found himself writing during those long evenings after filming in various locations across New Mexico, dedicating his free hours to being creative. Whether it's a drawing or a song, Caleb feels the need to create so as not to feel like he's wasting his time. With his creative faculties on fire, he knew he had to return directly to the studio when filming stopped. Reassembling the same team that worked on The Mother Stone, including producer Nic Jodoin, he found himself in the elegant Valentine Recording Studio in Los Angeles, a studio steeped in history—from Bing Crosby to Frank Zappa. 'Gadzooks Vol. 1' is unlike anything you've heard before—comparisons range from Skip Spence's fractured masterpiece Oar, to the troubadour Robyn Hitchcock, to John Lennon's dark moods on The White Album and Frank Zappa's caustic surrealism. Recording on tape, Caleb hacked each take to reassemble the songs like Escher diagrams. Part of a creative outpouring—as its title suggests, a second half of this album is already on the horizon—'Gadzooks Vol. 1' is exciting, shocking, and wonderfully entertaining. Each song begins and ends in utterly unique places, often entirely separate from each other.
