His relationship with Ferg goes back more than twenty years, to the time of the sessions for Johnny Cash's album American III, produced by Rick Rubin. Ferg was then a sound engineer and Cash had covered the song "I See A Darkness" by Bonnie "Prince" Billy. Oldham and Ferg have since worked together on many projects, but the collaboration had never been as intense as on The Purple Bird.In addition to Ferg and Tim O'Brien, country singer John Anderson, Ronnie Bowman, Pat McLaughlin, Tommy Prine, and Roger Cook also contributed to the songwriting.
