In 2019, Bob Mould faced the despair of modern times with Sunshine Rock, a melodic and optimistic album. And now, in the spring of 2020, he declares that we are deep in it. This feeling is reflected in his new album, Blue Hearts, the raging yin but oh so catchy yang of Sunshine Rock. Of course, it wasn't already looking bright in 2018. At that time, he wrote a song titled "American Crisis." Confined at home in San Francisco, he realizes that it was the seeds of the current crisis. The third song on this new album, "American Crisis," vehemently denounces those who have fomented this crisis. With some of the most direct and confrontational lyrics of a four-decade career, Blue Hearts delivers the most melodic series of protest songs written at once by Bob Mould. A sense of déjà vu emerges from the autumn of 2019, taking him back to autumn 1983: as a closeted gay man at 22, he was touring with the now legendary Hüsker Dü and witnessing his generation decimated by AIDS. Recorded at the famous Electrical Audio in Chicago with Beau Sorenson at the helm and Mould producing, Blue Hearts is a nod to Mould's past while remaining firmly rooted in the issues of our time. The first acoustic track, "Heart on My Sleeve," catalogs the ravages of climate change. "Next Generation" worries about who will be next. Bob Mould barely remembers writing "Leather Dreams," "Password to My Soul," and "The Ocean," composed during a three-day sleepless stretch; however, his album Blue Hearts, as melodic as it is explosive, is certainly memorable!
