Not all band names starting with "Black" are necessarily metal bands... This is proven by this great discovery from Canada, a prolific land since the 90s... The style of Black Mountain is more akin to the psychedelic meanderings of a modernized Pink Floyd, mixed with a Queens of the Stone Age-esque stoner and Girls Against Boys-style alternative rock... With this second album, which confirms the undeniable talent of Stephen McBean and his band, Black Mountain makes eardrums vibrate in a rather unusual way. The Vancouver quintet is capable of delivering atmospheric and touching melodies, astounding guitar flights, and rather accomplished psychotropic songs. Evidence of this can be found on the "trippy" "Tyrants," the mysterious "Night Walks," and, above all, on the apocalyptic – and very long, seventeen minutes on the clock – "Bright Lights," a true tour de force with multiple layers. Speaking of time, Black Mountain is a band to be appreciated over the long haul, through repeated listens, which reveal new musical corners each time. In this sense, Black Mountain is a timeless band. In an era where everything must be efficient, fast, and ephemeral, the band focuses on depth and is not afraid of the spatio-temporal rift imposed by its music... "In the Future" may well be aptly named. Only time will tell. Arnaud De Vaubicourt - Copyright 2017 Music Story
