Syncretic

Description

Syncretic marks the debut album of the Australian duo Bhairavi Raman and Nanthesh Sivarajah, united by a Tamil heritage and a desire to connect tradition and modernity. Raman, a violinist trained in both Western and Carnatic repertoires, explores the dual identity of her instrument, historically shared between East and West. Her playing, nourished by the teaching of masters in India and Australia, combines rigor, emotion, and experimentation. Sivarajah, a percussionist and mridangam player, brings a rhythmic depth that both structures and adorns the compositions. Together, they weave a dialogue between the practices of their respective cultures, paying homage to the lineage while reinventing it.Without yielding to the overload often associated with genre fusion, Syncretic finds a rare balance. The sound effects - loops, delays, synthesized harmonies - illuminate the Carnatic tradition in a new light without altering its spirituality. Each piece reveals the technical mastery and sensitivity of the two artists, capable of making the Carnatic structure breathe within a contemporary framework. In works like Guardian, Sivarajah's mridangam becomes the beating heart of a new sonic architecture, linking continuity and innovation. The album unfolds as a meditation on diasporic musical identity: respectful of the past, but resolutely turned toward the future.
