A Study Of Losses is the seventh studio album by Beirut, the musical project of American Zach Condon. The album came about in spring 2023, when Viktoria Dalborg, director of the Swedish circus Kompani Giraff, contacted Zach to ask if he would be interested in composing music for their upcoming project, a show based on an adaptation of a novel by German author Judith Schalansky. The main themes of the book and its circus adaptation deal with loss, mourning, and the impermanence of all that we know: from extinct animal species to lost architectural and literary treasures, as well as more abstract concepts of loss due to the aging process. A Study Of Losses evolved into an unexpected musical work – with 18 songs and nearly an hour of music, it is by far the largest album Beirut has ever released, and undoubtedly one of their most beautiful works to date.
