In 1965, L.H. "Buddy" and Debra Hough opened the Museum of Tragedy in American History in their own home, right next to the old Saint Augustine jail. Buddy's admission to the Chamber of Commerce, after years of struggling against the old town's judgment of his collection of "objects of dubious authenticity and frankly bad taste," briefly boosted the museum's attendance. The Beggar Weeds grew up on Florida school field trips, visiting tourist attractions, citrus stands, and animal zoos, and celebrated together the music and stories of their shared Panhandle roots. Their stories, marked by urgency, are carried by the melodic voices of three brothers in spirit who shout over taut rhythms, heralding the imminent arrival of the alt-country movement. Their narratives and performance are fresh and authentic, without frills or superfluous effects.
