Doctor Atomic is considered one of John Adams' masterpieces, and one of the major operas of the 21st century. Created in 2005 in San Francisco, with a libretto by Peter Sellars, the story of Doctor Atomic is based on the history of the Manhattan Project at the time of the Trinity test and particularly on its main scientific actor, Robert Oppenheimer, and recounts the last hours leading up to the American atomic bomb test in the summer of 1945 in the New Mexico desert, the same bomb that would hit Hiroshima in August 1945. The remarkable cast, notably featuring Canadian baritone Gerald Finley in the role of the "mad scientist" Robert Oppenheimer and American soprano Julia Bullock in the role of his wife, is supported by the BBC Singers and the BBC Symphony Orchestra brilliantly conducted by John Adams himself.
