Rumon Gamba's exploration of Ruth Gipps's music continues with these world premiere recordings of the Fifth Symphony, the Violin Concerto, and Leviathan, performed by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. Leviathan, for contrabassoon and orchestra, is performed here by Bill Anderson, contrabassoonist of the BBC Philharmonic. Completed in 1982 and dedicated to Sir William Walton, Gipps's fifth symphony is written for a large ensemble; its final movement unusually takes the form of a Missa Brevis for orchestra. By listening carefully, it becomes possible to identify the unsung words or phrases of the mass with individual instrumental lines: the details of the orchestration also reflect the spirit of the liturgical sections. Decidedly, Ruth Gipps is unique!
