Ever since Julian Lennon, we’ve been accustomed to discovering the sons and daughters of famous people. Jeff Buckley and Rufus Wainwright are among them and have contributed their talent to the great edifice of music. Baxter Dury was thus born the son of Ian Dury, leader of an extraordinary band, The Blockheads. Having fallen out with school, he learned his craft from the albums brought home. Without having visited his record collection, we know that we would likely find albums by Tindersticks, Love, and Mercury Rev there, not to mention the influence of The Velvet Underground, present on the album in the form of a sample from "Oh Sweet Nuthin’." Signed by the very talented Rough Trade boss Geoff Travis, Dury offers a debut album that is modest in its arrangements and forever sincere in its gentle voice. Surrounded by two Portishead members and one from Pulp on some of the tracks, this album, composed by the multi-instrumentalist Dury, should be listened to with care and eagerness.
