Formed in 2002 in New York, BATTLES weaves together disparate threads of hardcore, avant-garde sonic minimalism, neoclassical, techno, and post-rock, with drummer John Stanier (Helmet), guitarists Ian Williams (Don Caballero) and Dave Konopka (Lynx), and Tyondai Braxton. After a series of EPs, the band signed with WARP and released their debut album MIRRORED in 2007. The album was an immediate and profound success. In the winter of 2009, the band settled into the studio to begin working on the follow-up. Braxton then realized he couldn't commit to the tour planned after the second album's release and left the band. With Braxton gone, they began the thankless process of deconstruction. The remaining three realized there was a natural space on some tracks to invite vocalists. And only an infinitely curious band like BATTLES could have assembled such a variety of singers. Appearing on the album are English dark synth-pop pioneer Gary Numan, Chilean minimal techno producer Matias Aguayo from Kompakt, cult indie rocker Kazu Makino from Blonde Redhead, and Yamantaka Eye, the messianic frontman of Japanese avant-garde band Boredoms.
