A DEBUT ALBUM THAT HITS HARD AND SOFTLY BETWEEN ANXIOUS KRAUTROCK & MELODIC 90S INDIE ROCK
Four years of absence were undoubtedly enough to de facto bury Baston in the minds of all those who discovered the trio with their hard-hitting first EP, Gesture, released in 2015. After solidifying their Finistère roots with the recruitment of Simon "La Roche" Magadur on keyboards, Baston, against all odds, makes a comeback with their debut album, Primates. Woven with haunting rhythms, icy keyboard layers, and hypnotic guitars behind which Maxime Derrien's spectral vocals fade, Primates sculpts an anxious and deeply melodic krautrock as the tracks unfold. In the midst of a 90s revival, the band thus confirms their mastery of timing and their keen sense of show business. Although executed with that clever blend of elegant nonchalance and charming amateurism that characterizes them, Baston's motorik pop demonstrates astonishing mastery, rarely heard on a debut album. While no one was expecting Primates, Baston's first album should nevertheless easily leave its mark upon its release on Howlin' Banana Records.
