Maria Fumaca by Banda Black Rio is one of the best Brazilian samba-disco-funk-soul-fusion albums of all time. Banda Black Rio was created in 1976 by the late Oberdan Magalhães in Rio de Janeiro. They revolutionized the "black instrumental music" of the time with their Brazilian reinterpretation of soul, jazz, funk, and disco grooves, inspired by musicians like Tim Maia and reminiscent of Kool & The Gang and Earth, Wind & Fire during their heyday in the 1970s. Maria Fumaca is the band's first album, originally released on Atlantic in 1977, a record that made the group known worldwide.
