The story this album tells is one of an encounter: that of BALAPHONICS & MARY MAY. Of two worlds that rubbed shoulders on Parisian stages and jams for years before coalescing throughout 2022. Still marked by the music shared with griot Moriba Diabate in Mali, Balaphonics had always wanted to deepen their vocal collaboration without taking the plunge. With Mary May, it's done. Mary's arrival tenfold amplifies Balaphonics' emotional power and creates a synergy that pushes each musician to their limits, for the better. During a creative residency, the group invited director Yann 'Yanke' Yankielewicz to channel this excitement into concentration. From his initial feedback, Yanke's dialectic pushed the artists to unlearn in order to allow themselves other ways of interpreting their tracks. Yann gets his hands dirty: he makes the sousaphone rumble; he greases the pistons: 'above all, don't play together! Play less but play more!', and unbridled the mojo of guitarist Hamza Bencherif, who joined the group at the same time as Mary. He approaches each piece from an angle, balancing them with a fresh perspective. Immersed for 5 days at Studios La Frette (78), BALAPHONICS & MARY MAY were able to enjoy optimal conditions to give birth to this eponymous album. What remains is a concentrate of 7 tracks with deep temperaments, marked by the experiences of a singer confronted with domination, a quest for identity, and overcoming the dichotomy between listening to oneself and listening to others. An endless quest that this new album to be released proposes to illustrate... in 40 minutes. The message oscillates between optimism, an invitation to ecological awareness, reflection on ancestors whose names we don't know, and self-confidence. So many themes in tune with the collective and individual reflections inherent to our time. The voice that Marie Mina (Mary May) lends to Balaphonics' compositions lays the foundation for a collaboration that motivates both the artistic team and the project partners. "The Parisian afro brass band and the singer unveil a pure rhythmic and soulful gem, demystifying the moral order." --- FIP ---.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0898/4943/0360/files/3521381578591_265ea7dd-a580-4caa-a85f-0c93cb111ef7.jpg?v=1760318463
