Playing The Room testifies to the long-standing musical friendship between Avishai Cohen and Yonathan Avishai. Recorded in September 2018, under the artistic direction of Manfred Eicher, Playing The Room is available as both an audiophile vinyl record and a compact disc.
Both were still teenagers when they discovered a passion for jazz in Tel Aviv and set out to explore its territories together. Since then, they have never stopped playing together, with Yonathan notably making decisive contributions to Avishai's ECM albums Into The Silence and Cross My Palm With Silver. This first duo album begins with original music jointly composed by the trumpeter and pianist and concludes with a poignant interpretation of the lullaby Shir Eres by Israeli composer Alexander Argov. In between, Avishai and Yonathan improvise - freely, playfully, and with great emotional depth - on themes from the jazz tradition. Moreover, as the album title suggests, the two musicians largely took into account the recording location, the famous Auditorio Stelio Molo RSI in Lugano, making its unique acoustic resonances a major player in the album, resulting in intimate music that in many ways resembles chamber music.
