DEUTSCHE GRAMMOPHON SIGNS THE FIRST MANDOLINIST IN THE HISTORY OF THE LABEL! When we think of the mandolin today, it is often bluegrass music that comes to mind, while this instrument originating from Italy has held a special place in classical music since the 17th century: from Vivaldi to Mahler, including Mozart and Schoenberg. Avi Avital, born in 1978 in Israel to Moroccan parents, began studying the mandolin at the age of 8, with the Russian violinist Simcha Nathanson, who fled to Israel after escaping the Soviet regime. After graduating from the Jerusalem Music Academy, Avi Avital decided to broaden his horizons by going to study the mandolin in Padua. "I have never considered the mandolin to be a limited instrument. Yet, I ended up wondering if I could truly consider myself a mandolinist without ever having gone to Italy to study the history and original repertoire of my instrument." In 2010, he was the first mandolinist to be nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of "Best Instrumental Soloist." His open-mindedness, passion for all musical genres, and virtuosity mean that he cannot be satisfied with playing only the repertoire for mandolin. For his first recording with Deutsche Grammophon, he chose Bach, whose most beautiful concertos composed for harpsichord or violin, for example, he arranged himself. AVI AVITAL: A MUSICIAN WITHOUT BORDERS!
