"I had a handful of songs on the shelf for years, and then I was inspired over a few nights in my basement in early 2023," explains Rheinheimer. He played almost all the instruments himself, assembling the songs layer by layer with producer Ben Morey at Submarine Sound Studio. An approach that recalls Dancing is Depressing (2010) and Swim Through the Dirt (2008). "This name and legacy have always represented an eternal outlet for me. It's a part of my foundations." There is a sense of space throughout the album, somewhere between the tightness of basement recordings and the open air. "Mirrored in Plastic" stretches its plainspoken melancholy in the spirit of David Berman and the Silver Jews. "Bruised Water Moon" leans towards Pacific Northwest indie and Midwest emo, with pedal steel accents giving the song a slight western reflection. "T-Shirt" drifts on slightly off-kilter guitar lines, something in the spirit of Pavement. Songs that feel found in the moment, as if the words and melodies simply flowed while he played.
