Canada has long been a source from which fierce technical brutality springs. In that tradition, Atræ Bilis now offer us the imminent predatory attack of Apexapien, their debut album calibrated to set them on a path of unfettered exploration and ascent. Like many bands on the 20 Buck Spin roster, Atræ Bilis take elements from several metal subgenres and twist them into a distinctive alloy that transcends the sum of its parts. On Apexapien, angular blackened dissonance, exhilarating progressive experimentation, and crushing guttural savagery coalesce into a violently discordant death metal cacophony, all held together by strict focus and discipline and mind-bending percussive momentum. Modern in design and unforgiving in execution, the abominable blows inflicted here place Atræ Bilis at the forefront of a new mutation of visionary death metal bands who neither just pay tribute to the genre's great progenitors nor abandon them completely.
