Franz Liszt was born in Hungary 200 years ago, on October 22, 1811. A revolutionary composer, virtuoso pianist, conductor, prolific writer, legendary teacher, philanthropist, and humanist, Liszt profoundly marked his era. An emblematic figure of the romantic generation, a true legend in his lifetime, he can be considered the first "pop star" in the history of music. An incomparable "propagator" of the music of others, he led his career in almost all the countries that make up today's European Union. Liszt always spoke and wrote in French; he confessed a "chauvinistic passion for Paris" where he settled at the age of 12. It is because of these privileged ties that the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs decided to establish the Liszt Year 2011 in France, listed among the National Celebrations, to celebrate the bicentennial of his birth. The 6CD box set is organized by themes: CD1 with piano and orchestra, CDs 2, 3, and 4 with solo piano, CD5 with melodies, CD6 with orchestral works. EMI has selected the greatest virtuoso artists capable of doing justice to both the diabolical virtuosity of the composer and the poetry of the Years of Pilgrimage: Cziffra, Béroff, Duchâble.
