Luigi Mozzani is a major figure in the history of classical guitar and Italian lutherie. A musician and guitarist of remarkable talent, he distinguished himself as a concert performer, composer, teacher, and innovative luthier. Born in Faenza on March 9, 1869 (although some sources cite Granarolo di Romagna as his birthplace), Mozzani's youth was marked by economic difficulties, which led him to leave school after the first year. Nevertheless, he educated himself and developed a keen interest in music. Initially starting with the clarinet, he graduated with a degree in oboe from the Conservatorio di Bologna at the age of 18 before dedicating himself to the guitar, an instrument that brought him fame and led him to perform in several Italian cities, as well as in European and North American capitals. He founded a lutherie school whose developments, in the quest for a perfect balance between art and science, are still recognized internationally today. The typically Italian taste for melody—stemming from opera and chamber romance—distinguishes his compositions for guitar, which have remained almost entirely unexplored until now and have finally been brought to light in their entirety thanks to the interpretations of Walter Zanetti (joined by Monica Paolini in the pieces for two guitars).
