With "Forgotten Ways," Coltaine creates a sound universe that defies easy categorization. Founded in the Black Forest in 2022, the band merges post-metal, blackgaze, psychedelic rock, and doom into a dark work that is both dreamlike and strikingly emotionally intense. Released on CD by Moment Of Collapse Records. After a few minutes of listening, the album immerses the listener in a misty world where light and darkness intertwine endlessly. Heavy, reverberating guitar textures coexist with fragile melodies; sonic explosions alternate with almost meditative passages. The result is an intense tension between existential gravity and an underlying hope that runs through the tracks like a spiritual counterpoint. Musically, some moments evoke the raw power of post-metal, while others venture into psychedelic realms or melancholic landscapes typical of blackgaze. Yet, "Forgotten Ways" never sounds random. Coltaine manages to forge a unique and organic sound language from these diverse influences. The tracks evolve slowly, almost hypnotically, drawing their impact less from conventional structures than from atmosphere and dynamics. The band's ability to combine extreme intensity with great sensitivity is particularly impressive. The music is both raw and cathartic, yet possesses great finesse and deep reflection. It is therefore not surprising that their concerts are described as ecstatic experiences: this same energy is palpable throughout the album.
