Although it enjoyed success in its time, Creonte then disappeared for 250 years until it was accidentally discovered in a Portuguese library. It may have been hidden there because its story of love against power ends with a surprising democratic twist – a bold gesture in that autocratic era. Since Creonte is the first surviving opera by a Ukrainian composer, its revival in Kyiv in 2024 has become an act of defiance, a symbol of national importance highlighting the ongoing vitality of Ukrainian culture even in times of war.
