The 1961 edition of The Messengers featured Lee Morgan on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone, Bobby Timmons on piano, and Jymie Merritt on bass. In February and May of 1961, this line-up (with pianist Walter Davis Jr on two tracks) entered Rudy Van Gelder's New Jersey studio and began to compose *Roots & Herbs*, a brilliant set of six Shorter compositions, including the hard bop title track, the playful "Ping Pong" and the sophisticated "United." The album was eventually released in 1970 and deserves a place among Blakey's best recordings.
Launched in 2019, the Tone Poet series is produced by Joe Harley and features all-analog 180g vinyl reissues, mastered from the original tapes by Kevin Gray of Cohearent Audio. Tone Poet vinyl is manufactured at RTI in Camarillo, California, and packaged in Stoughton Printing's deluxe "Old Style" Tip-On Gatefold jackets. Titles are chosen by Harley and cover Blue Note catalog favorites as well as underrated classics.
