{"product_id":"arnaud-dolmen-leonardo-montana_leno-vinyl_2024_lad","title":"LENO (vinyl)","description":"The accomplished Guadeloupean drummer and composer Arnaud Dolmen returns with his third album, LéNo, a duo effort with his longtime collaborator, the talented Brazilian pianist Leonardo Montana. Across 12 tracks, the duo crafts an audacious and rhythmic blend, a teeming musical kaleidoscope where the inspirations of both musicians masterfully intertwine, immersing you in a dreamlike elsewhere. A modern album where the piano-drums-choirs are self-sufficient. \"As artists, our mission is to share hope with the world, the madness of listening to oneself. LéNo is a call to freedom.\" Arnaud Dolmen \u0026 Leonardo Montana. This opus features 12 tracks, all arranged by Arnaud Dolmen and Leonardo Montana. It includes their duo compositions ('Les Invisibles Part1', 'Spirale', presented in 4 parts), compositions by the drummer ('Hey Cousin', 'Zouky Monky', 'LéNo') and the pianist ('Agora Sim', 'Hajj'). On two tracks, the duo revisits two standards: Cuban percussionist Mongo Santamaria's 'Afro Blue' ('Les Invisibles Part 2') and Argentinian bassist Pedro Aznar's ('Romance de la Luna Tucumana'). If the Caribbean is a 'Continent of Islands', as a reporter and great traveler once wrote, then the record you hold in your hands is a continent of music. A continent under the ten fingers of Arnaud Dolmen and Leonardo Montana. Admit it, it's prodigious! In music, as in all forms of art, it's not just about being agile with your hands. You also need to have felt, tasted, seen, and lived for each note to be whole, full of everything you want to put into it. But what exactly to put in? Your multiple roots, your conflicting paths... and why not your accent? Arnaud Dolmen and Leonardo Montana each have one, their own, different but not so much. Let's start with Arnaud. A world unto himself. The quintessence of the modern Guadeloupean drummer: versatile, cultured, passionate, and captivating. 'Undoubtedly the drummer who is most in the music,' whispers godfather Mario Canonge. Celebrated in mainland France as much as in Sainte-Anne, Dolmen is now indispensable. With him, no matter the vessel, there's always intoxication. Montana, his partner in all kinds of adventures, is his primary listener. 'Arnaud is always in the moment. With him, everything can change in a fraction of a second, which shows a wonderful quality of listening. He is the very example of someone who plays with an open heart. He is so transparent in his feelings that what you hear is truly who he is. To know Arnaud, you just need to hear him play.' Leonardo Montana, on the other hand, is a chameleon. Born in Bolivia, a Parisian by adoption, it's less known that at thirteen, this Brazilian encountered Guadeloupe, where the power of Gwoka left an indelible mark on him. 'I was overwhelmed by this machine, this sound that came out of it, which reminded me of what I had seen in Brazil but couldn't explain.' Percussive, orchestral, mastering chiaroscuro, the harsh and the beautiful, fire and peace, Montana is a poet. 'One of the most original and intelligent pianists I've played with,' confides Felipe Cabrera, the Cuban master of the double bass who has followed him for twenty-two years. 'If I were born again,' he continues, 'I would only play with him.' Inventive and dreamy, Leonardo is not afraid of risk: 'together, we can follow unforeseen paths,' Arnaud enthuses, 'and when we go for it frankly, it creates something magical.' From there, LéNo seemed an obvious choice, although it came about somewhat by chance, their first stage appearances interrupted by a storm and a global pandemic! But the desire to make music as a duo and to delve into their shared obsessions was stronger. To speak, to blend their accents, to drink from the source of the elders (Sergius Geoffroy, Gérard Lockel), and to find in great precedents ('Streams Of Consciousness' by Max Roach and Dollar Brand) the material for a unique discourse. — So, with their eyes, their ears, their voices, and their hands, Dolmen and Montana gave form to their idea, composing a fascinating, fearless, uncompromising record. A 'whole' record: push it to full volume, listen to the rushing sounds, the insistent strings, the drums and cymbals that burst forth, clang, jostle, and crackle. One might have thought that with just two, something would be missing. Nothing is missing. Carried away by the rhythms and the dance, captivated by the piano's ostinatos, the cascades and leaps into the void, the spirit surrenders. The sound recording—that art form that is unseen but heard—opens wide the doors to their world. A world where two musicians sound like five or ten, and where in every interstice springs forth history, convictions, imagination, and dreams. \"Before the journey, we are children of the same lineages,\" declared guitarist Christian Laviso to journalist Jacques Denis. \"Americans lost the drum. Not us.\" Arnaud Dolmen and Leonardo Montana have not forgotten it. Punctuated by the Spirales, this record seems to say that history is infinite, that everything is just a new beginning. Drawing the best from his Jazzette, the smallest type of drum kit, Dolmen transcends heritage, expands his field of expression tenfold, and shows incredible inventiveness, giving Leonardo's every line new dimensions. Drawing their strength from all of creolity, this Continent of Islands that overflows to the shores of Louisiana and Brazil, Arnaud Dolmen and Leonardo Montana follow this great path opened by the elders, and create a captivating, modern, and timeless record.
