Description

Revisiting *Haram* more than four years after its release provides a clearer understanding of its scope. At the time, attention primarily focused on how this outsider duo would fare under the spotlight, especially alongside a living legend like Alchemist. In retrospect, we can see how the producer stepped out of his comfort zone to meet ELUCID and billy woods where they were, and how the three artists subsequently explored new sonic territories. The vibrant energy of "Bring The Stars Out," the asymmetrical drone of "Chicharrones," the fugue bounce of "God’s Feet," and the inimitable "Peppertree" or "Stonefruit" give the album a unique identity, unlike anything in either The Alchemist’s or Armand Hammer’s discography. *Haram* achieves the paradox of being both accessible and experimental, while remaining cohesive. The duo, of course, was not alone on this project. KAYANA’s golden voice illuminates "Black Sunlight," Fielded’s sensual alto transforms under effects on "Aubergine," and Earl Sweatshirt leaves his mark on the luminous "Falling Out the Sky." Curly Castro, Amani, and Quelle Chris also contribute their energy to key moments of the album, enriching an already impressive cast. If *Haram* was impressive upon its release, it only improves with time. Listening to these tracks today, lights dimmed and a drink in hand, reveals new subtleties and confirms the timeless strength of this album, which continues to surprise and transport the listener.
