The great Norwegian bassist Arild Andersen has always stood out for his immense taste for challenge during the fifty years he has recorded on the ECM label.
For the first recording of his brand new quartet, which includes two rising stars of contemporary jazz, Marius Neset and Helge Lien (both also leaders of their own bands), Andersen thus chose to offer almost entirely improvised music.
Left to their own devices, driven by a common faith in their respective qualities, the musicians of the orchestra venture into the unknown, find forms to develop together in the moment, and transform this session into a magnificent example of spontaneous collective creativity. 'Affirmation' was recorded in November 2021 at Rainbow Studio in Oslo.
