Free and Easy: the Complete Works 19
Description
Edward "Apple" Nelson, otherwise known as "Apple and The Three Orange," is a funk drummer from the 70s Californian scene. A hero of the funk scene alongside his comrade Arthur Monday, his playing also recalls Earl Palmer's famous "swamp beat" and is a direct homage to that brilliant drummer from New Orleans. On his label Sagittarius Records, he released 6 unforgettable funk and soul records (5 under the name 'Apple and The Three Oranges', one under his own name, 'Ed. (sic) Nelson') before retiring. These songs (as well as what he recorded previously) constitute historical moments in soul and funk music. For a funk drummer, Nelson possesses a unique sense of drum placement. We have the privilege of presenting this complete anthology, almost 40 years after Nelson ended his career. The fact that he cannot explain the contradictions that have marked his life makes the music and the story of this man (told in the book "free and easy") all the more disturbing. Most of his records are rarities today, not to mention all the recordings lost in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. The singles "Curse Upon The World" and "I'll Give You A Ring (When I Come, If I Come)" are among the most expensive records one can find in Californian soul and funk; collectors snatch them up at exorbitant prices.
