Antonín Dvořák no longer needs an introduction, neither in his country nor elsewhere in the world. But are his works for piano really well-known? The Piano Concerto in G minor has recently sparked renewed interest, but Dvořák's solo piano pieces remain, for the most part, an unexplored territory, even for many pianists and musicologists. What a shame! They lack the power and emotional subtlety of Chopin, as well as the ostentatious virtuosity of Liszt. Like the rest of his work, Dvořák, in his piano pieces, has always favored great finesse, far from any display of virtuosity, for an intimate and tender poetry, overflowing with ideas, and a genius sensitivity that is reflected even in his miniatures. Such music certainly deserves a new complete recording. The challenge has been taken up by Ivo Kahánek, an artist whose recording of Dvořák's challenging Piano Concerto, made with the Bamberger Symphoniker under the direction of Jakub Hruša, has been praised by critics and even won the prestigious BBC Music Magazine Concerto Award. This 4-CD box set includes cycles (Silhouettes, Poetic Mood, and the Suite in A major, composed in the United States and highly valued by Dvořák himself), occasional pieces, as well as several lesser-known works, recorded for the very first time. Among them is the polka "Forget-me-not," the first miniature by Dvořák that has come down to us, written at the age of 14. The recording of the piano works offers a new valuable insight into the richness of the composer's soul.
