Description

Opéra-comique in three acts, La Fille de Madame Angot was premiered on the stage of the Théâtre des Fantaisies-Parisiennes in Brussels on December 4, 1872, before being performed just as triumphantly in France on February 21, 1873. In Paris under the Directory, Clairette Angot, an orphan raised by the people of the Halles, falls in love with the songwriter Ange Pitou. But, after many amorous and political twists and turns, she resigns herself to marrying the wigmaker Pomponnet. Lecocq's score strings together hit pieces and sparks an enthusiasm that keeps it on the bill at the Folies-Dramatiques for over four hundred performances, before conquering all of France and then the entire world in various translations. The work still belongs to the repertoire of lyric theaters, where it still enjoys relative popularity.
