On the occasion of his first solo cello recording as part of ECM's New Series collection, Anja Lechner takes on a bold program that brings together three composers from very different eras and styles: J.S. Bach, Carl Friedrich Abel, and Tobias Hume.As evidenced by his extensive discography with the renowned Rosamunde Quartet, as well as alongside artists who create universes bridging classical music and sound idioms from around the world, Anja Lechner has over the years accumulated experiences that have opened his singular vision of a borderless musical world. It is with this particular perspective that Lechner approached this collection of works composed for both cello and viola da gamba over a period of two centuries, offering decidedly personal interpretations. Placing at its heart the first two cello suites from Bach's famous collection composed for the instrument, the program also features a series of pieces by Abel and Hume originally written for viola da gamba, here transformed in terms of both colors and dynamics through the use of the cello and the grace of original arrangements written by Lechner himself.
