Sunday Morning Put-On

Description

In nearly thirty years of career, multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bird has continued to refine his art, oscillating between folk, swing, and indie rock. True to his open-minded spirit, 'Sunday Morning Put-On', his sixteenth studio album, takes him in a new direction inspired by his early loves, the jazz of the 1930s and 1940s, discovered in his early twenties, to the sound of 78s broadcast on late-night radio shows.Recorded live at the legendary Studio Valentine in Burbank (California), where personalities as diverse as Stan Kenton, Bing Crosby, and Frank Zappa crossed paths, Sunday Morning Put-On includes nine personalized covers of jazz standards and songs and themes from musicals.Accompanied by Ted Poor (drums), Alan Hampton (double bass), and contributions from guitarist Jeff Parker and Larry Goldings on keyboards, Andrew Bird reimagines, among others, the classics "Caravan" (Duke Ellington), "I Fall In Love Too Easily", popularized in 1945 by Frank Sinatra, and the Broadway tunes "I've Grown Accustomed to Your Face" (heard in My Fair Lady) and "Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise", taken from the 1928 operetta The New Moon.
