Valentin Silvestrov, the most important contemporary composer from Ukraine, reflects on his rich musical journey and the turmoil of exile in Berlin in the new recording Forgotten Word I Wished to Say. Celebrated with an OPUS Klassik award in 2022, Silvestrov's works resonate with influences from Mozart, Schubert, and Mahler. Forgotten Word I Wished to Say, initiated by Silvestrov himself and featuring the renowned Russian pianist Alexei Lubimov and Ukrainian soprano Viktoria Vitrenko, presents compositions from the 1970s to 2023, including the poignant vocal cycle Stufen and piano pieces composed in Berlin. These works, imbued with nostalgia and romanticism, reveal Silvestrov's melodic genius and poetic power. Lubimov's interpretation of Kitsch-Musik, a multi-part piano suite inspired by Schumann, Chopin, and Brahms, and the Three Pieces dedicated to Silvestrov's late wife are highlights of the event. The recent Two Pieces from Berlin evoke the sadness of the ongoing war but end on a bright, hopeful note, symbolizing a longing for peace. Alexei Lubimov, one of the greatest interpreters of Silvestrov's music, brings unmatched depth and sensitivity to these performances.
