Grits & Glory

Description

Albert Castiglia doesn't mince words on "Grits & Glory," his latest solo album recorded at the legendary Abbey Road studios and released on Gulf Coast Records. This record marks a return to his roots, reconnecting with the wide-eyed young New Yorker, guitar in hand, whose world shifted from black and white to color thanks to an 8-track cassette of "Rubber Soul," heard on the way to a baseball game. That spark of curiosity drove him to explore sounds and meet musicians - Jeff Beck, John Mayall, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page - whose influence still resonates in his playing today. British blues has always been an essential component of his DNA... but out of reach. Until now. The idea took root during a European tour in 2023, when Albert and Olly Overton, from Gulf Coast Records, discussed the possibility of bringing him back to Britain to record. Castiglia was game, on one condition: recording with his usual band, Cliff Moore on bass and Ray Hangen on drums. The final piece of the puzzle fell into place with producer Dave Gross, a longtime friend, a connoisseur of Abbey Road, and a long-time collaborator of Albert's, having notably produced Solid Ground. With the team complete, the project was set. As soon as the label gave the green light, only one place was right for the sessions: Abbey Road. Before recording, Albert immersed himself in British culture, stopping in Birmingham to walk the streets that gave birth to Black Sabbath and Tony Iommi - heroes who deeply marked his musical soul. Following Ozzy Osbourne's death, this visit took on a special, contemplative dimension. Then on to London, where the click happened and Grits & Glory took shape - a pure Albert Castiglia, steeped in British-style blues. The result is intense, vibrant, and alive, an album that crackles with history, emotion, and raw authenticity that demands to be played loud and lived fully.
