Description

Released in 1980, Alan Vega's self-titled debut solo album came out while Suicide was releasing *Suicide: Alan Vega and Martin Rev*. While ZE Records attempted to steer the duo toward Moroder-esque synth disco, Vega leaned into his sonic roots: blues, rockabilly, early rock 'n' roll, and the enduring influence of Elvis Presley. Between sessions with Suicide, he wrote his own songs and tested them live, laying the foundation for his first record. Similar to his visual artwork, Vega layered sounds in a minimalist, dynamic, and thoughtful way. Tracks like the anthem "Jukebox Babe" embody this approach with a danceable rhythm and an unapologetic minimalism. "Kung Foo Cowboy" explores Southern blues roots, while "Ice Drummer" blends melodic and plaintive vocals, pounding drums, and subtle harmonica. "Bye Bye Bayou" fuses 50s rockabilly with Vega's eccentric style, covered by LCD Soundsystem in 2009, and "Ice Drummer" was honored by The Flaming Lips, confirming the artist's influence. Remastered by Josh Bonati from the original tapes and available for the first time on streaming, the album has been faithfully reissued by Sacred Bones Records. Alan Vega retains the raw intensity of the original while making it accessible to new listeners. Devoid of Suicide's intense electronics but retaining Vega's extraordinary energy, it reinvents rock 'n' roll through an art-punk prism, remaining a manifesto of artistic independence and a timeless cult classic.
