A 40th Symphony without support, lively, soaring like a comet reminds us that Sir Neville Marriner and his musicians were well aware of the contributions of historically informed performance: while the instruments are modern, the accents, the rhythms, the ensemble playing have little in common with the way symphonic formations played Mozart back then.
This immaculate evening closes with a 25th Concerto of all effusive tenderness, Brendel sings softly, as in a dream, the small orchestra is a garden, it’s tear-jerking. What a reunion!»
