In 1989, Ukrainian band Vopli Vidopliassova, darlings of the Soviet punk scene, released a semi-official cassette titled *Tantsi* (“Dances”). The album, composed of songs in Ukrainian and Russian, was recorded in a single night during an electrifying DIY session in Kyiv. The band members conceived of it as nothing more than a simple demo. But fans quickly began to duplicate it, and for connoisseurs of Soviet punk, the recording rapidly achieved cult status thanks to its incisive and often hilarious songs, which ridiculed life in the last years of the USSR. In 2019, the original tape was rediscovered, and in 2023, *Tantsi* finally received its first official release. Featuring the fully remastered original album and rare bonus tracks, *Tantsi* is a true time capsule of late Soviet-era Kyiv, where Ukrainian punks rebelled against the Kremlin’s repressive regime and imagined new horizons.
