Pantera began as a glam metal band in the early 1980s with founding brothers Dimebag Darrell (guitar) and Vinnie Paul (drums), joined by Rex Brown (bass) and Terrence Lee (vocals). The lineup solidified in 1986 when Philip Anselmo replaced Lee, marking the start of their signature sound blending thrash and groove metal influences. They broke through mainstream metal with the 1990 ’Cowboys From Hell’ album, followed by pivotal releases such as ’Vulgar Display Of Power’ (1992) and ’Far Beyond Driven’ (1994), which topped charts in the US and Australia. Their subsequent albums, ’The Great Southern Trendkill’ (1996) and ’Reinventing The Steel’ (2000), continued to push heavier sounds amid internal struggles, ending with their breakup in 2003.
