Fusion, jazz-rock & funk on vinyl: when improvisation meets electricity
From Bitches Brew to Head Hunters: The birth of a new language
At the dawn of the 1970s, Miles Davis shattered jazz conventions with In a Silent Way (1969) and the seismic Bitches Brew (1970). By plugging his horns into distorted guitars, electric keyboards and rock-infused rhythms, he opened a door that generations of musicians would rush through. Fusion was born: jazz borrowed rock's raw energy, funk's irresistible pulse and psychedelia's textures, all while preserving the freedom of improvisation. On vinyl, this hybridisation comes into its own, the warmth of the groove doing justice to swirling Moog layers and snapped basslines alike.
Trailblazers and essential records
John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra pushed technical boundaries with The Inner Mounting Flame (1971) and Birds of Fire (1973), while Weather Report, led by Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter, crafted atmospheric fusion culminating in Heavy Weather (1977) and its hit Birdland. Chick Corea's Return to Forever explored Latin-infused virtuosity on Romantic Warrior (1976). On the funk side, Herbie Hancock dropped the groovy bombs Head Hunters (1973) and Thrust (1974), whilst Billy Cobham delivered the explosive Spectrum (1973). Don't overlook The Crusaders, Stanley Clarke (School Days, 1976) or Jaco Pastorius, whose 1976 self-titled debut revolutionised the electric bass. Collecting these gems on vinyl means hunting down original pressings on Columbia, CTI, Atlantic or ECM, prized for their dynamic mastering and warm, punchy sound, and a price comparison service can help you quickly spot the best deals across different sellers.
