Mumin performs under his own name, but also under the pseudonym Dan Nuby when he layers double bass parts. The sessions, whose exact dates remain unknown, feature drummer William Holmes, a collaborator of Sonny Simmons, who provides a remarkable rhythmic anchor. Born Joseph W. Phillips in 1944, Mumin became a central figure in the Cleveland free jazz scene in the 1960s, influenced by the spiritual impact of Yusef Lateef and his collaborations with Norman Howard, Albert Ayler, and later Wadud and Shahid. Remaining discreet after the Black Unity Trio adventure, he had only released one digital album under his own name. Remastered by Colorsound Studio, Journey to the Ancient thus reveals one of the most underrated talents of avant-garde jazz. The album is accompanied by a two-page booklet signed by Mumin and critic Pierre Crépon, offering new insight into the rich history of free jazz in Cleveland.
