The eponymous sonata remains one of the major works of the Viennese composer! Mendelssohn wrote this \"Sonata No. 2\" for cello and piano in 1843, almost 20 years after Schubert's. Mendelssohn started quickly and well: at 12, he had composed an opera, and his famous \"Octet\" was written when he was... 16! This sonata is very classical, in form and musical inspirations, a little gem from this composer who, beyond his work, helped rediscover the music of J.S. Bach. Richard Strauss was also precocious: he read a score before knowing the alphabet... And so at 16, he composed this sonata! Later, Richard Strauss would turn to grand symphonic poems, but this youthful work remains a model in his chamber music, filled with romanticism and classicism, and where this love of orchestral colors already shines through.
