For Bondi, stubbornness has always meant refusing to let power go unquestioned. Written in Seattle and recorded in two days at Soundhouse Recording Studio, the album, in both its sound and its lineup, is stripped-down and thoughtful. Immediate, gripping, and surgically precise, its title (chosen by Jello Biafra) nods to confession while pointing a finger at culture.Bondi's political engagement was forged early on. The son of a U.S. Navy captain, he moved twenty-two times before turning eighteen. \"When you grow up in a military family, you move about every two years, whether you like it or not,\" he explains. \"So, as imposing as your father might seem, it's actually someone else pulling the strings and directly affecting you, especially if you're a child.\" This instability, he says, \"predisposes you to a healthy skepticism toward authority figures.\" Bondi has been channeling that skepticism for decades, establishing himself as a founding figure of the early '80s Chicago hardcore scene with Articles of Faith. After Articles of Faith split in 1985, Bondi played in Jones Very and Alloy, then fronted Report Suspicious Activity (with J Robbins of Jawbox), Dead Ending (with Derek Grant of Alkaline Trio and Joe Principe of Rise Against), and Tom Morello's Weatherman.
