The members of the London quartet have been playing together since they were teenagers. They caught the attention of the press in late 2019 with their first concert. Upon its release during the pandemic, the album made a significant impact, but Charlie Drinkwater, guitarist Alex Sprogis, producer and bassist-keyboardist Nic Bueth, and drummer Ed Kelland remained confined to their homes, like everyone else, unable to perform it live. Charlie and his family were going through a difficult time, which led him to write lyrics that allowed him to express a deeper sense of his personal truth, using music as a vehicle to communicate his declining mental health to the rest of the band. The tension between existential fear born from life's constant uncertainties and the affirmative, cathartic urge to seize the moment is at the heart of My Other People. The album builds on the band's tightly-knit working method. Nic is once again at the helm of self-production. The result is a widescreen art-rock rather than pure post-punk. As much as possible, the band tried to trust the first takes, rather than overworking the tracks. What interests them is progress. Sometimes, it can be scary to stay still...
