(vinyl)","description":"Some projects are the result of lengthy aesthetic rumination, giving birth to highly concerted works that seal years of collaboration, while others, conversely, emerge from the pure play of chance, staking their necessity and the uniqueness of their message on the joyous epiphany of an unexpected encounter... Such is the case of this aptly named album, which, by bringing together French trumpeter Airelle Besson with two eminent figures of the young jazz scene across the Rhine, pianist Sebastian Sternal and drummer Jonas Burkwinkel, marks the official birth of a trio as unexpected as it is captivating. Their improbable, fortuitous, and deliciously tightrope-walking orchestral formula, through its combined fragility and daring, engenders over the tracks a music full of charm and audacity, distilling a lyricism of incredible freshness of inspiration through a kaleidoscope of refined and continually renewed forms. It all began over ten years ago, in September 2013, when double bassist Riccardo Del Fra, then head of the jazz department at the CNSM in Paris, put together a Franco-German orchestra for a multi-week tour in homage to Chet Baker, bringing together Airelle Besson and Pierrick Pedron on one side, and Sebastian Sternal and Jonas Burkwinkel on the other. The chemistry between the musicians was immediate, and at the end of this series of concerts, Airelle, Sebastian, and Jonas vowed not to let it end there, each seeking to extend, in one form or another, this contact so rich in potential. The opportunity arose just a few months later when, invited by the Münster festival to perform with musicians of her choice as part of a kind of carte blanche, Airelle proposed to the organizers the unprecedented experience of this trio with Sebastian and Jonas. The project was approved, a repertoire quickly developed, deftly mixing old compositions from each band member, and after a short rehearsal organized just hours before the concert, the trio, without a safety net, took to the stage, driven simply by the pure pleasure of reuniting and the desire to surprise themselves. Experimenting in situ and in vivo with the very particular dynamics and orchestral colors induced by this almost involuntary instrumentation, the group, with a spontaneous blend of expressive jubilation and collective formal audacity, offered such a promising performance for this debut that what could have remained an ephemeral prototype transformed in the minds of each protagonist into a long-term joint project. Over the years and through various concerts, it gradually developed and refined itself, never abandoning that original grace founded on the wonder of the encounter. It is this particular alchemy between its members, which has constituted the very identity of the trio since its beginnings, that this first album, so beautifully named \"Surprise!\", masterfully highlights and subtly actualizes. Through a repertoire that is essentially the same as that of the original concert (only the title track \"Surprise!\" was composed afterwards, specifically for the group), Airelle on trumpet, in her highly personal, precise, economical, refined style, constantly striving for the purity of song; Sebastian on piano(s) and Fender Rhodes, placing all the fluidity and discreet virtuosity of his playing at the service of the ensemble sound with a remarkable sense of architecture and spatial arrangement; and Jonas on drums, imbuing the trio with both its foundation and its *pneuma* with an art of groove and punctuation of rare finesse – here refract a prismatic palette of moods and forms of incredible richness and diversity. For what is striking when listening to this album is how much the trio, without ever losing coherence or personality, escapes any systemic approach – each piece seeming like a kind of prototype in which the group tests and experiments with the fragility induced by the vacant double bass in its core, multiplying ways to compensate for this structural imbalance in order to give body and form, always differently, to its most intimate song. Placing a definite taste for melody at the center of its concerns (constantly magnified by the minimalist phrasing and matte sound of Airelle Besson's trumpet), the trio thus multiplies approaches, moving from lyrical pieces with elegiac or even melancholic tones to mischievous exercises in cleverly deconstructivist style. Favoring brief forms very precisely drawn and arranged with a true sense of dramaturgy based on the eloquence of understatement and the dynamics of space, \"Surprise!\", in many respects, ultimately sounds, in a very contemporary way, like an album of songs. In this context, both refined and deliberately tending towards a form of simplicity, Airelle Besson, Sebastian Sternal, and Jonas Burkwinkel succeed in constantly nourishing the group's sonic identity with their voices without ever sacrificing their strong personalities. This is not the least of the surprises of this masterful album!","brand":"TRIO BESSON STERNAL BURGWINKEL","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":55310236516696,"sku":null,"price":23908278.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0898\/4943\/0360\/files\/3521381598100_cc611350-86c3-4c16-9805-75706ef1597d.jpg?v=1760318652","url":"https:\/\/vinyles.com\/en-us\/products\/trio-besson-sternal-burgwinkel_surprise-vinyl_2024_lad","provider":"Vinyles.com","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
