{"product_id":"the-royal-philharmonic-orchestra_tchaikovski-integrale-des-ballets_2021","title":"Tchaïkovski : Intégrale des ballets","description":"Grouping Tchaikovsky's three ballets (Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, and The Nutcracker) into a box set is a good idea. Moreover, with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, an ensemble that has a serious tradition in this repertoire since the time of its founder, Sir Thomas Beecham. The Nutcracker, for example, was recorded in its entirety under the baton of Ashkenazy and Rodzinski. Conducted by David Maninov, the work appeals to both children and the adult world. The thirst for exoticism permeates many of the ballet's dances. Tchaikovsky draws his inspiration from the most popular dances at the end of the 19th century: Arabic dance (the café), Spanish (the chocolate), Chinese (the tea), Russian (Trepak)… For his part, Nicolae Moldoveanu conducts Swan Lake with a focus on the spectacular and impactful. His interpretation seems closer to choreography than to a pure symphonic score. The composer did not merely set \"steps to music\": he gave psychological weight to each character, which the orchestra sometimes conveys with a certain vehemence. The tale by Perrault, Sleeping Beauty, served as the model for the ballet, which was commissioned by the director of the imperial theaters of Russia. Tchaikovsky explicitly referenced the spirit of Lully, Bach, and Rameau to convey the magic of the story. Barry Wordsworth captures, even more than the other two conductors, the elegance of the writing that rivals the symphonies of the composer's maturity.
