the-liminanas_7-rare-stuff-20092014_2014
7" & Rare Stuff 2009/2014
After three albums above reproach, The Limiñanas (Trouble In Mind, 2010), Crystal Anis (HoZac Records, 2012) and Costa Blanca (Trouble In Mind, 2013), the Limiñanas have earned respect to the point of seeing the doors of the palace of recognition begin to open. Mme and Mr Limiñana have gathered their tracks scattered across 45s and compilations for an album with a not very happy subtitle, "7" and Rare Stuff 2009/2014", but in any case, explicit, and the whole thing wrapped in a magnificent double sleeve (gatefold as they say in the US). Four covers appear on the tracklist, including one lifted from the Troggs and made French by Lionel Limiñana, "Tu es à moi". There is "An Ugly Death" originally released on Jay Reatard: A French Tribute (Teenage Hate Records, 2014), "I Know There's an Answer" taken from the Beach Boys bible, Pet Sounds, and "Christmas" sung by Darene Love in 1963 for a Christmas compilation, although Phil Spector originally intended it for the Ronettes. The music, the lyrics, the playful mood, Marie’s voice, Lionel’s, all contribute to making the Limiñanas an essential band, a free electron fluttering between Françoise Hardy, Brigitte Bardot, Serge Gainsbourg, from Nuggets to Suicide, like a butterfly gathering nectar from only the most fragrant flowers. The Limiñanas are a couple; without one another, it probably wouldn’t work. That’s not to say that Marie is Lionel’s muse. These two are in the process of inscribing their name in the hall of fame alongside John & Yoko, Serge & Jane, etc. The Limiñanas are the standard-bearer of French Touch, the only one that matters!
