When listening to it again in 2021, this dazzling and inspired blend of Persian tradition, New York avant-garde, and electronic music remains just as soulful, incomparable, and captivating. Combining the sublime voice of Iranian singer Sussan Deyhim with the electronic sorcery of American composer Richard Horowitz, *Desert Equations* wonderfully mixes the diverse sources that nourished the duo: their experiences at the epicenter of the early 80s New York avant-garde scene, Sussan's intimate knowledge of traditional Persian music and its reverberations in the artistic scenes of 1970s Iran (she was part of the Persian National Ballet before working with Maurice Béjart), and Richard's rich background in electronics, popular Moroccan music, and jazz (he frequented the American free jazz expat scene in Paris during the seventies and played there with Braxton, Alan Silva, and Steve Lacy). This futuristic album notably captivated the writer Paul Bowles, who wondered: \"was this music created under the influence of majoun?\", which led him to advise filmmaker Bernardo Bertolucci to entrust Richard Horowitz with the composition of the music for his film adaptation of \"The Sheltering Sky\" (Bowles' cult novel), a work for which Horowitz was awarded a Golden Globe. *Desert Equations: Azax Attra* was also adapted into a musical theater piece, commissioned by the famous La MaMa Theatre in New York. This reissue is fully remastered and includes three previously unreleased tracks as bonuses, as well as a substantial booklet (in the vinyl version) containing numerous photographs and a cross-journal in which the protagonists narrate their incredible individual and shared stories. Following the release of *Desert Equations*, Sussan Deyhim and Richard Horowitz recorded many albums, together or separately, including *Majoun*, *Logic of the Birds*, *Madman of God*, and *Shy Angels* (the albums Sussan dedicated to Persian Sufi poetry), *Possessed* and *Turbulent* (albums created by Sussan in collaboration with visual artist Shirin Neshat), and *La Belle et la Bête*. Sussan Deyhim has also worked with Peter Gabriel, Jah Wobble, Bobby McFerrin, Adrian Sherwood, Bill Laswell, Ornette Coleman, and Alexandre Desplat (for the soundtrack of the film \"Argo\"). Richard Horowitz has collaborated with Jaron Lanier, Hassan Hakmoun, and David Byrne, was the original artistic director of the Gnaoua Festival in Essaouira, and has written and recorded music for films by Oliver Stone, Bob Swaim, as well as several Moroccan filmmakers, including Nour Eddine Lakhmari, Faouzi Bensaidi \u0026 Souheil Ben Barka. Before *Desert Equations*, Richard had recorded two albums, including the legendary *Eros in Arabia* (1981, recently reissued by the New York label FTS-RVNG).","brand":"Sussan Deyhim","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":55304344109400,"sku":null,"price":23883612.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0898\/4943\/0360\/files\/0876623008354_3f652231-94de-47eb-ae7b-fc25f1738d71.jpg?v=1772568658","url":"https:\/\/vinyles.com\/en-us\/products\/sussan-deyhim_desert-equations-azax-attra-made-to-measure-vol-8_2021_pia","provider":"Vinyles.com","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
